Issue 16: May-Jun 2019 – The Professional Anomaly

Joseph Nuwamanya Okuuny

It just has to be said that his timekeeping was rather impressive. The interview was scheduled for 10:00am and his arrival at 9:30am was somewhat unexpected. We were in the middle of tea, and trying to catch our breath, as we waited for him.

His cheeky and down-to-earth nature is possibly the first thing I noticed about him. After the greetings, he took his seat and immediately took over the conversation. He came early so that there would be “time to break the ice, and do informal introductions to create a friendlier environment for the interview process.” How about that!

Service quality and caring for customers

Because Joseph is in the service-based industry, it makes sense that these qualities [planning, decision-making, etc] matter to him. The service industry also means that he is emotionally invested in the business. He shares that “Clients come to you because of how you make them feel or because you add value to their lives, the people they love or the things they care about. Make them feel special and you will have their business for life. The best compliment you can ever ask of anyone is advice; you are paying them a compliment and they feel like they have something special to add to your life and my clients are no exception.” This explains why he endeavors to be available to his clients as much as possible.

How do you stay ahead in life? What makes you stand out, of course, apart from some of the qualities you have shared with us?

“I must admit,I am invested in continuous learning. It is important to me that I am always up-to-date in the field with trends, and this in a big way dictates how I run my business. Most of my learning is also done through travelling, and I travel often, for work and life generally. I turn 40 this year and I think that with a defined sense of purpose, I am beginning to understand that there is privilege that come with working in an environment where you can make a difference every day. For me this has been within my community, in my family, in the various leadership positions I have taken up, and generally in the lives of people I meet.”
